Artist statement
Killu Sukmit is an feminist artist based in Tallinn, who works with textiles, text, installation, sound and sonic storytelling. In her practice, she mixes forgotten histories and subversive activist language, which meets the theme of the work.
Sukmit’s latest exhibitions have dealt, among other things, with feminist folklore in fairy tales. In the exhibition Subversive Embroidery (together with Tiina Sööt, 2025), for example, Linda, Mary and Eve meet, and talk to each other about feminist mothering. Together with other women, they make protest slogans and accidentally discover someone who actually lives in a spider’s web.
Since the 1990s, Sukmit has been involved in several feminist collectives such as the Valie Export Society, The Elfriede Jelinek School of English Language, and Feminismbuilder. She co-founded Kraam, an artist-run space (with Minna Hint), and was one of the organisers of Ladyfest Tallinn.
Her recent solo exhibitions include Talks with a Tiger (2024) at Draakon Gallery, Pudu and Bread (2022) at Pärnu City Gallery, Artist and Her Work (2021) at Tartu Art House, Monumental Gallery, K’s Garden (2019) at Kraam artist-run space.
Since 2012, she has played drums in the noise duo Hello Killu (with Hello Upan). Also played in the bands Dr. Dorothee & Why, Extrafine, Paul Cole & Ring My Bell, and Punane.
